Right of way · COLREGS · Boating licence

Learn the rules of the road at the helm.

Sjöklart puts you in real encounters on the water, in 3D. You decide, watch what happens, and get the rule explained — with the paragraph to back it up. Fun enough for a ten-year-old. Rigorous enough for your licence.

COLREGS · Rule 15Correct

Crossing: give way to the vessel on your starboard side.

  • ✓Right manoeuvre+34°
  • ✓In ample time0,6 M
How it works

Four steps. Thirty seconds.

No multiple choice and no rulebook to memorise. You learn the way you learn on the water: by reading the situation and making a call.

  1. 01

    Read the situation

Another vessel appears. Wind, heading and speed are all there — just like on the water.

  2. 02

    Steer

Take the helm. Give way early and clearly — or hold your course if that's your job.

  3. 03

    Watch it play out

The boats keep moving. The right call gives a clean pass. The wrong one shows immediately.

  4. 04

    Understand the rule

A short, plain-language explanation, with a reference to the rule it rests on.

Try it · The real game

Take the helm.

This is Sjöklart, right in your browser. Steer for the yellow mark. When another vessel appears, you decide what the rules require — and the chart alongside shows exactly how it went.

Needs WebGPU

The sea needs WebGPU.

The 3D game needs WebGPU: Chrome, Edge or Safari 26 or later. This browser doesn't draw the water yet, so the boats end up on empty sky.

Assessment

Correct. Not roughly.

An encounter doesn't pass just because you turned the right way. Sjöklart grades what the rules actually require: that you acted in ample time, clearly, and at a safe distance.

Basis
The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, COLREGS. Every explanation cites the rule it rests on.

Additions from the Swedish Sjötrafikförordningen come as a separate layer.
Mistakes
Aren't punished. You see why — and try again straight away.

What you'll know afterwards.

Power against power, sail against sail and everything in between — from the most common encounter to the exceptions the exam likes to ask about.

Then you take the helm yourself.

Once the rules stick, leave the drills behind. Steer from mark to mark, meet the traffic that turns up, and get a debrief of every encounter when the voyage is over.

Questions

Good to know.

Is Sjöklart enough to pass the licence exam?

No, and we don't claim it is. Sjöklart trains the right-of-way rules — the part where it's easiest to go wrong. Combine it with a course or textbook for the rest.

Which rules is it based on?

The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). Every explanation names the rule it rests on. Swedish additions from Sjötrafikförordningen come as a separate layer.

Do I need an account?

No. Your progress is saved on your device. No sign-in, no ads.

Is it suitable for kids?

Yes. Each encounter takes a few seconds and the language is simple. Mistakes aren't punished — you see why and try again.

When is the app coming?
